Nonie

Nonie is a 25-year-old quarter horse mare, who was found starving in an unattended pasture in Santa Rosa. Despite her emaciated condition, Nonie has maintained the very sweetest disposition, and she has become known for her trademark "ears forward" facial expression. She is a trooper, and CHANGE brought her back to a healthy body condition.

Although rideable, Nonie is ready to be retired. Her body has been though enough at this time, and so she will be looking for a loving home as a pasture pal/member of a loving family as soon as she is fully rehabilitated. This perfectly behaved, gentle mare would be a wonderful friend to another horse and she is bomb proof around children.

Nonie inspired her foster care providers as she approached her rehabilitation with her characteristic "ears forward" attitude. She turned the corner on her weight gain—a diet of green grass, alfalfa hay, Equine Senior pellets and rice bran/wheat germ oil seem to be doing the trick. She also got over a full body skin fungal infection (a.k.a. "rain rot"). Today her coat was shining as she grazed in the sun! She still remains the sweetest, most gentle, and appreciative horse despite all that she has been through. What an inspiration!

Update - April, 2010
Nonie thrived in rehabilitation! Her skin fungal infection cleared up and she reached an ideal body condition score. She is spending her days grazing on lush green grass with a pasture pal, and she enjoys pellets for lunch. The caretakers say that she does not even need a halter—they open her stall door in the morning and she walks to her pasture. At noon, they open the pasture gate, and she walks to her stall to eat her pellets. Then again, she heads back out for some afternoon frolicking without prompting or a halter. She has sunk in to the routine of "the good life" nicely! She has found a permanent adoptive home to love her for the gentle and friendly horse that she is.
