Sugar

Congratulations Taylor on your adoption of Sugar! We are so pleased that she has found a loving home!

-------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome back Sugar! Through no fault of her own, the lovely Sugar has returned to CHANGE foster care. Some may remember her as "Sugar the Birdcage Horse." Back in May 2016, CHANGE got a call from Animal Control about a panicked white horse that was galloping down the middle of Stony Point Road --- dragging a huge iron parrot cage. We responded and found an incredibly beat up and exhausted horse who was fortunate to be alive with no major permanent injury.

We later learned that Sugar's owner had tethered her to the bird cage in order to allow her to eat grass. In fact, in the course of Animal Services' investigation, it was determined that two other at-risk horses -- Maya and Sophia -- found on Sugar's property were elderly mares who had gone missing from an earlier humane case! It was like CSI horsey style! All three mares were seized by Animal Services, fostered by CHANGE, and adopted out.

Today, Sugar is about 10 years old. She is a 14.3 hand Quarter Horse. Sugar is green broke to ride, very kind, and lights up around children. Sugar is an easy going girl to have around. She gets along well in group turnout, loads, trailers, bathes, clips and ties like a pro. She is great for the farrier and vet.

Sugar is one of those rare gems we get in rescue. She is uncomplicated enough that she would be suitable for a more novice owner. Sugar will need additional schooling and miles under saddle but shows lots of potential as an easy-going all-around low level horse to enjoy on trails and at local events. She connects sweetly with her person and loves attention.

We are looking for just the right person who will pamper Sugar and make her a focus in their life. Someone who is prepared to offer Sugar a lifetime home through thick and thin. This girl is a real find and we will ensure that she lands in the best possible spot.

If you are interested in learning more about Sugar, please submit an adoption questionnaire so that we can get to know you, and our adoption coordinator will be in touch.

As a reminder, we do not place horses in commercial use situations or allow their resale. All applicants are heavily vetted, including a look at your previous ownership history, veterinary and farrier references, and a site check of your barn. We do annual in-person welfare checks of all adopted horses, and require you to present CHANGE with evidence of routine maintenance such as dental work. Sugar's adoption fee is $150 to approved lifetime home.

Adoption application should be emailed to Director@SonomaChangeProgram.com: https://sonomachangeprogram.com/.../CHANGE%20ADOPTION...

As if we didn’t love Sugar enough, she’s proven to be quite a fancy little riding horse! She is well started, though still green, and will require quiet, sensible miles. She continues to impress us with her calm, willing temperament and sunny outlook. Someone is going to get a horse of a lifetime.

Update: 8/11/16
Sugar has blossomed into a beautiful and charming young lady. We have ridden her, and determined that she has some good basic training and would be considered green broke. She went on a field trip to Dressage In The Wine Country, and greeted her fans and all the festivities with the same calm and friendly demeanor she's shown about everything. Another bonus? We discovered she LOVES kids. She's ready to become a permanent and loving part of your family.
Update 6/28/16 Sugar is a 4-5yo Quarter Horse-type mare who is looking for a forever home. Sugar was found running on a busy road in Santa Rosa on May 15, 2016. She was dragging a large birdcage and had galloped for over a mile by the time she was caught. The mare had cuts and scrapes and was very sore after her ordeal. Sonoma County Animal Services requested assistance from CHANGE, which provided the mare with emergency transport, veterinary care, and TLC in a CHANGE foster barn. Despite her experience, Sugar is a sweet, gentle mare who has proven to be easy going in all situations. She recently attended Dressage In The Wine Country and was calm and unflappable and loved meeting everybody who stopped by. She seems to have a particular love and fascination for kids, so would love a family looking to give her a forever home. Though she still has some residual soreness from her ordeal, she is expected to make a complete recovery. Everybody who meets this special girl falls madly in love with her, won’t you make her part of your family?
